Looking closely at what both agnosticism and atheism are, this is not much a question of logic. Agnosticism is basically saying “I don’t know” in regards to the existence of a deity. Atheism is simply a person stating their disbelief in god(s) due to the non-existence of evidence. Many people are both atheistic and agnostic simultaneously, stating they don’t know whether god exists because they can’t prove it – and, at the same time, not conceding god’s existence because there is no evidence. If one has to choose either or, though, atheism is more logical, albeit slightly.
The Lack of Evidence
When it comes to the existence of god and the discussion of both atheism and a deity, one must harp on the fact that there is no evidence supporting or even suggesting the existence of this deity. Here is where atheism stands on solid, unshakeable ground. There has been nothing presented, by any human being ever, to show us god. Now, there are some “atheists” out there who will say they know for a fact whether a god exists; these people are deluded; they’re lying; they’re not really atheists. They are what one can call pseudo-omnipotent: a person who believes they are all-knowing. They can be ignored or brushed off immediately.
A real atheist will simply say “show me the evidence of god, and I’ll consider this being’s existence. Until then, I will continue to disbelieve” Nothing more. Because an atheist knows the evidence, proof, and observation is what verifies reality.
Agnostics, on the other hand, are without knowledge, stating they do not know whether god exists; saying one cannot know whether god exists. Agnostics, usually with an air of modesty (modesty does not make an argument any more correct), state a person simply cannot know Of course, these stances are all one-hundred-percent factual. There is no denying these stances. It is not fence-sitting, as some atheists and believers say – it is factual. But, in the same breath, one can suggest these are weak or watered-down stances.
Why is this the case?
Because an individual can apply agnosticism to anything. If it was suggested there are spell-casting Hobbits living on the rocky core of Jupiter, it would be immediately brushed off and dismissed out of hand. But, in reality, one can apply the same agnostic logic to Jupiter’s Spell-Casting Hobbits.
Both are good, solid stances and one really shouldn’t make an attempt to draw a solid line between the two. Free thought is free thought, and free thought is what humanity needs more of cross-culturally; it shows that we’re thinking. But, as it can be seen, atheism is simply the slightly more logical stance of the two.
