The Bible is a book of wisdom. From Genesis to Revelation, the verses are inspirational, educative, guiding and/or cautioning. There are a total of 222 verses that contain the word wisdom in the Bible. Making reference to the King James Version, the following are some of the Bible verses about wisdom.
Psalms 111:10 “The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom: a good understanding has all they that do his commandments: his praise endures forever.” This verse is very clear. It has no hidden meaning to it. It simply states that one gets wise when they fear the Lord. The fear of the Lord in this context refers to obeying the Lord and His commandments. Ecclesiastes 12:13 further explains the fear of the Lord as “Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man.”
Well, if you find that you lack wisdom, James 1:5 reads; “If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that gives to all men liberally, and upbraids not; and it shall be given him.” By this alone, you can see that there is no excuse not to be wise. Wisdom is given by God freely and in plenty to those who ask. God promises to give us whatever we ask for. Looking at the book of Matthew 7: 7-11 “Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you: For every one that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth, and to him that knocketh it shall be opened. Or what man is there of you, whom if his son ask bread, will he give him a stone? Or if he asks a fish, will he give him a serpent? If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children, how much more shall your Father which is in heaven give good things to them that ask him?”
The wisdom that comes from the Lord is not the same as the “wisdom” of the world.
With no offense intended, there are people who are full of knowledge and others are even intellectuals but unfortunately, they are not wise. James explains wisdom as pure and free from hypocrisy; James 3:17 But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, and easy to be entreated, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality, and without hypocrisy. 1 Corinthians 2:6-8 states that; Howbeit we speak wisdom among them that are perfect: yet not the wisdom of this world, nor of the princes of this world, that come to naught: But we speak the wisdom of God in a mystery, even the hidden wisdom, which God ordained before the world unto our glory: Which none of the princes of this world knew: for had they known it, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory. The book of 1 Corinthians 3:19 states that “For the wisdom of this world is foolishness with God. For it is written, He takes the wise in their own craftiness.”
Those verses are very clear. Humankind thinks of itself as wise but sincerely, lacks wisdom. What man is actually doing is increasing knowledge which they refer to as wisdom. It is important to note that the bible also warns about getting too much wisdom. The book of Wisdom; Ecclesiastes, in the first chapter and the eighteenth verse, says, Ecclesiastes 1:18 “For in much wisdom is much grief: and he that increases knowledge increases sorrow.” It is called the book of wisdom mainly because it is full of wisdom and wise sayings. This could be attributed to the fact that it was written by the wisest man; Solomon. Remember that Solomon asked God for wisdom when God asked him what he wanted. Instead of asking for riches, long life, fame, or power like the average man would Solomon asked God for wisdom. And God gave him a lot of wisdom.
