Let’s begin this discussion by defining marriage from a biblical perspective by saying the institution of marriage was instituted by God Himself when He removed a rib from the side of Adam to form the woman, Eve, and the two became a family joined in holy matrimony. That being said, God established marriage the way He intended and how it is to remain; between male-man and woman-female. The marriage between male and female follows God’s creative format in the plant and animal kingdoms of a male and female.
Marriage from a biblical perspective
That said, let’s look the Student Bible Dictionary (P.151) definition of marriage, which states marriage is a commitment of a man and woman to wed their lives together lovingly in a union that is total: spiritual, mental and physical (Matthew 19:5-6; Mark 10:7-9; 2 Corinthians 11:2-3; Ephesians 5:21-25). It also states that God created marriage, encourages it, and commands unity in it as a lifelong relationship (Genesis 2;24-25). It was the first institution.
Zondervan’s Pictorial Bible Dictionary (P.511) defines marriage as an intimate personal union to which a man and woman consent, consummated and is perfected in a life-long partnership of mutual love and commitment. The unity of marriage between a man and a woman is of God’s creative will as it is from Him comes to love and grace which enables them to grow together in life comradeship to beget children, and to fulfill their responsibility toward their children and society as a family unit. We have looked at marriage from a Biblical point of view supported by Biblical dictionaries, now let us see how Merriam-Webster’s Dictionary (P.541) defines marriage. It defines marriage as the mutual relation of husband and wife: the institution whereby a man and a woman are joined in a special social and legal relationship for the purpose of making a home and raising a family.
It is noteworthy to say, from the above-provided definitions marriage is between a man and a woman and this union was established by God and it must not be altered and or comprised in any way. This is a holy union as the intimate relationship between God and man so is the marriage union between man and woman. There must be endless love for one another just as it is between God and man. An intimate relationship between man and God is Vertical and between man and woman is horizontal, both being in holy union with each other.
The Fidelity of marriage and our relationship to God
From our Scripture text, we see the fidelity of marriage just as it is in our relationship to our faithful God who is committed to mankind being saved from sin and to spend eternity with Him in a holy state of matrimony. That being said, sex outside of marriage is discouraged when it speaks to the bed is undefiled. When sex remains within the marriage speaks to the faithfulness which honors God as it emulates His faithfulness to His people.
Let us look at believers being the bride of Christ as He is the head of the church. The church and believers are called into holy matrimony to Him and one day the wedding will occur (Revelation 19:7). Believers are called into holiness as we have been sanctified by Christ atoning work on Calvary’s cross. That said, believers are sanctified to live holy lives before God and in union with Christ our Savior.
God the Father is holy who established the holy union of marriage between a man and a woman; therefore, all believers are part of the bride of Christ-the Church.
Obey your holy union with God and between husband and wives as both are holy unions.
