“The Lord our God, the Lord is one” is a phrase spoken in the Shema of the Old Testament and by Jesus in the New Testament. God’s omnipotence, omnipresence and being an omniscient deity are the only words close enough to tell you how awesome God is. Even these words lack what God truly is, so you can only know so much before words trying to describe God begin defeating themselves. In that back and forth you start to see and find duality, seeing that:
“He causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous.”
To be one with God is to realize that God lives in you like this spirit, the Holy Spirit.
When you come to God, you ask for forgiveness. The first true mention of the Holy Spirit, or Ruach Hakodesh in Hebrew, is in Psalm 51:7-11:
“Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean: wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow. Make me to hear joy and gladness; that the bones which thou hast broken may rejoice. Hide thy face from my sins, and blot out all mine iniquities. Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me. Cast me not away from thy presence; and take not thy holy spirit from me.”
The Holy Spirit is inside of you always. In Exodus 4:11-12 the Lord says:
“Who has made man’s mouth? Or who makes him mute or deaf, or seeing or blind? Is it not I, the LORD? Now then go, and I, even I, will be with your mouth, and teach you what you are to say.”
The Holy Spirit is God’s bullhorn through people.
Christians feel they are the only ones that have the Spirit as their golden ticket, but they aren’t the only ones. This Holy Ghost resides not just in one religion, and here begins another great misunderstanding. In Judaism, they see the Spirit as a piece of the Lord like an arm or leg, a very strong arm or leg.
In Christianity, the Spirit is its own God, or God in Spirit, and is the part of a separate but equal Trinity or part of what’s called the Godhead. As awesome as it is to be part of either faith, both agree that there’s only one God, returning to the phrase “The Lord our God, the Lord is One.”
So if the Holy Spirit is something in you, then it’s God, living in you and working you to the will. Native American cultures believe in a Great Spirit, and Chi or Qi, literally “breath,” has been practiced in Chinese medicine, philosophy and martial arts for thousands of years. Knowing the Holy Spirit is knowing what it is and what it represents. By understanding, in your own time and perception, the Holy Ghost becomes God working will through you, and letting go of your ego is only a small step.
