Although they could be bought at pretty much any department store in Salt Lake City, UT, most chose to earn them through the church. At a certain time in a Mormon’s life, they reach a spiritual age when they’re ready to take on the full responsibility and pride of being a Mormon. As a result, they go through a special ceremony Known as the temple endowment. 
This ceremony is as Apostle James E. Talmage explains, “The temple endowment, as administered in modern temples, comprises instruction relating to the significance and sequence of past dispensations, and the importance of the present as the greatest and grandest era in human history. This course of instruction includes a recital of the most prominent events of the creative period, the condition of our first parents in the Garden of Eden, their disobedience and consequent expulsion from that blissful abode, their condition in the lone and dreary world when doomed to live by labor and sweat, the plan of redemption by which the great transgression may be atoned, the period of the great apostasy, the restoration of the gospel with all its ancient powers and privileges, the absolute and indispensable conditions of personal purity and devotion to the right in present life, and a strict compliance with gospel requirements.”
What happens to the Graduated Mormon?
After this ritual is over, the graduated Mormon is expected to wear their new underwear at all times, no matter what the situation they’re in, and never be removed. The reason that Mormons wear them, is because the numerous symbols remind them of the promise that they made to their God, to be honest, and faithful to their Lord. Some might think that such an important religious object would be kept as a secret from the rest of the world. However, it’s more sacred if anything and any Mormon would most likely be open to explaining their underwear to someone who was bold enough to ask. Special Mormon underwear doesn’t sound like much but is a crucial part of life for some people.
